EMINEM'S DISS HAS MARIAH'S HUBBY ALL ATWITTER

EMINEM'S DISS HAS MARIAH'S HUBBY ALL ATWITTER

***As far as Nick Cannon is concerned, Eminem is crying out for his own broken soul. At least that's one of the proverb-invoking sentiments Mariah Carey's hubby twittered today in response to Slim Shady's latest dig at him and the missus.
***"Quote of the day: 'Never argue with fools because from a distance people cant tell who is who,'" went the first tweet from Cannon, posted early Friday afternoon. Good point, especially considering Eminem's latest diss track, "The Warning", was a response to Carey donning a hoodie and goatee to slam him in her video for the single "Obsessed".
***But gentleman that he is, Cannon wasn't going to sit idly by while Eminem rapped about doin' the nasty with his wife - albeit back in the day, but still pretty graphic stuff - and then threatened to unleash nudie pics on the world (presumably starting with the poor, unsuspecting blogosphere).
***Cannon's not going to kick Eminem's ass or anything, though. That's what the wrath of God is for. "Never take your own revenge, but rather give place unto the wrath. For it is written vengeance is mine, I will repay... PREACH!" read a tweet posted about an hour after the first, which was followed by "'I will bless those that bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse.' Genesis 12:3."
***Cannon followed up with a personal pep talk, writing, among other empowering morsels, "Be patient in the moment of anger and escape a hundred days of sorrow!" At one point he fancied himself "changing the world one hater at a time!"
***"People who project negativity ultimately are crying out for their own broken souls," Cannon started to wind down, before concluding (thankfully) with, "Trying to save a hater is like trying to teach astrophysics to a wino! LOL Chuuuuch!" Exactly.

NICK CANNON RESPONDS TO EMINEM DISSING HIM AND MARIAH

NICK CANNON RESPONDS TO EMINEM DISSING HIM AND MARIAH

***Already defending his wife Mariah Carey when Eminem dissed her in a song called "Bagpipes in Baghdad", Nick Cannon once again stepped forward to back her up when the Slim Shady mocked her for one more time in another track titled "Warning". He wrote on his Twitter, "Changing the world one hater at a time! Those who feed into negativity must examine there purpose on this earth."
***Nick continued with another post, "I will permit no man to narrow or degrade my soul by making me hate him. Be patient in the moment of anger and escape a hundred days of sorrow." Though Eminem's name is not mentioned in the message, but many believe it is meant as a response to the rapper's recent mockery which shot down not only Mariah but also Nick as well.
***"I will bless those that bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse. Genesis 12:3. Never take your own revenge, but rather give place unto the wrath. For it is written vengeance is mine, I will repay ... PREACH! When there are no enemies within the enemies outside can not hurt you!"
***"People who project negativity ultimately are crying out for their own broken souls," Nick then concluded. "Trying to save a hater is like trying to teach astrophysics to a wino! LOL Chuuuuch!"

THE MONETIZATION OF MIMI: MARIAH CD TO HAVE ADS

THE MONETIZATION OF MIMI: MARIAH CD TO HAVE ADS

***As music sales continue to drop like they're not so hot throughout the industry, Island Def Jam Music Group is jamming on a new business model: integrating brands into artists' CD booklets. The first deal, created for the Mariah Carey release Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel on September 15, is a 34-page co-production with Elle magazine that includes lifestyle ads from Elizabeth Arden, Angel Champagne, Carmen Steffens, Le Métier de Beauté and the Bahamas Board of Tourism. Providing the experiment goes well, the label is eyeing bigger brand deals for booklets of CDs by Rihanna, Bon Jovi, Kanye West and other artists.
*** The mini magazine contains Mariah-centric editorial ("VIP Access to Her Sexy Love Life", "Amazing Closet", "Recording Rituals") and lifestyle advertising along with lyrics and other CD booklet elements. Elle contributed the editorial and designed the layout.
***The booklets were created for the first run of U.S. CDs (1 million) and the first 500,000 overseas, said Jeff Straughn, svp-strategic marketing for Island Def Jam Music Group. It will also be available in a digital format for those who buy music online. A condensed version of the Mariah mag, sans the 14 pages of CD-specific material, will be inserted into 500,000 subscription copies of Elle's October issue, which arrives mid-September.
***"The idea was really simple thinking: 'We sell millions of records, so you should advertise with us,'" said Antonio "L.A." Reid, chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group, a unit of Universal Music Group. "My artists have substantial circulation - when you sell 2 million, 5 million, 8 million, that's a lot of eyeballs. Most magazines aren't as successful as those records."
***Carey was "very open" to the concept when Reid showed her a mock-up of the booklet in a magazine format that included brand imagery synonymous with her lifestyle. "I wouldn't want to do Mariah Carey and Comet abrasive cleaner," Reid said, laughing. "I wanted things that really reflected her taste."
***Reid said the program was unprecedented. Terry Dry, president of Los Angeles-based digital-word-of-mouth marketing agency Fanscape, agreed, saying that the CD booklet advertising is a first, though he wouldn't be surprised if more labels look into doing the same thing: "Hollywood Records [Disney], I know they love to monetize all over the place for something like a Jonas Brothers record. Open any rap record and a couple of inserts will come flying out, usually for a business the artist is a part of. I wouldn't be surprised if 50 Cent had a Vitaminwater thing."
***Labels are looking for ways to eke out extra bucks, borrow equity and cut costs anywhere they can today. Year-to-date album sales were down 13.9 percent for the week ending July 19, 2009, compared with the period last year, according to Nielsen SoundScan (227 million units vs. 195.5 million units). Of those 2009 sales, 18.9 percent, or 41.9 million, were digital.
***Ad revenues are subsidizing 100 percent of Island Records' costs for the Carey booklet, but label execs also see the alliance as a way to expand distribution at a time when the local music store is becoming as rare as the Beatles' Yesterday and Today LP with the "Butcher" cover.
***"We don't have music retailers any more, so a smart consumer products company that understands the value in distributing music is going to restore the vitality of our business," Reid speculated. "If we distribute music properly and if it's done tastefully, it could be a huge profit center for all of us. That is the missing link - we need partnerships."
***To underscore the point: At one large retail establishment, partner Elizabeth Arden is allowing the label to cross-promote the release. The CD Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel will be merchandised directly outside Walmart's music aisle with Carey's new signature Arden fragrance, Forever, which has its ad on the booklet's back cover. The CD and scent will also be displayed together in the beauty department.

DID EMINEM GO TOO FAR WITH HIS MARIAH CAREY DIS TRACK?

DID EMINEM GO TOO FAR WITH HIS MARIAH CAREY DIS TRACK?

***First Eminem wrote a song, "Bagpipes From Baghdad", directed at Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon. Then she seemed to respond to his track with her own, "Obsessed", although she has denied the song and the video were directed at him.
***Now, this week, Eminem has released a scathing dis track, "The Warning", directed at Carey and her husband, Nick Cannon, during which he alleges and describes what was his one full sexual encounter with Carey, labels her a "liar" and other ugly names, and threatens to reveal personal pictures and phone messages he has of the singer. (Carey has denied ever having a romantic relationship with Eminem, while he has insisted there was one.)
***Eminem has a history of blistering disses, but the song raises the question: Has he taken the feud too far? MTV News headed to Times Square to get fans' opinions on the matter. "I think Eminem has gone too far on this one," Cherie Gardner said. "Even if it is true, I think that's a bit too far."
***Another fan, Heather, agreed that the track is Eminem being Eminem, but perhaps to an extreme level. "I think if he did anything else, it wouldn't be his kind of signature thing," she said. "Although the part about murdering [her], that probably is a little too far."
***Meanwhile, Jamie Gilcrest was fluctuating about whether or not the track went too far. "Maybe it is a little inappropriate because he is kind of being an a--hole to her," he said. "But he's just getting his feelings out there, so I think that's pretty cool."
***But other fans think that this latest feud is stemming from a financial place, not an authentic place. "The dissing thing back and forth, that's kind of played out," Justin Price said. "You know what I'm saying. Like Jay-Z's beefing with the Game. Everyone's got a beef to sell stuff. Eminem is actually better than that."
***Yet Antwone Wright is quick to point out that this beef is a bit different from when two rappers beef. "Obviously it's going to be different than 50 Cent dissing Ja Rule, because I don't think that 50 cent and Ja Rule ever slept together! But you're trying to dis your girlfriend, I think I would consider that acceptable."
***Another fan thinks that the track is just Eminem being Eminem. "I don't think he's gone too far. He's Eminem," Katherine Schneeberger said. "That's what he does - be outrageous - so I don't really think it's too far."

EMINEM ISSUES "THE WARNING" TO MARIAH AND NICK

EMINEM ISSUES "THE WARNING" TO MARIAH AND NICK

***Six weeks ago Mariah Carey went on the offensive in her ongoing war of words with Eminem by releasing the single "Obsessed" and seeming to mock the rapper in the video version of the song. Yesterday, the Oscar-winning singer-songwriter ("Lose Yourself") responded with the obscenity-laden song "The Warning".
***As one of the only printable lines of the song says, "I'm obsessed now? Oh, gee that's supposed to be me in the video, with the goatee?" Eminem goes on to describe intimate details of a long-ago liaison with Mariah Carey, to mock her husband of 16 months Nick Cannon, and to threaten the release of compromising pictures and voice mails of the songstress.
***Mariah Carey has always prided herself on her songwriting abilities. In "Obsessed", she wrote in a rap directed to Eminem, "Why are you so obsessed with me? Boy I wanna know. Lying that you're sexing me when everybody knows it's clear that you're upset with me."
***While Eminem has said that he and Carey were one-time lovers, she repeatedly has denied his claim. On his new album "Relapse" released in mid-May, Eminem referenced Carey and Cannon in a less-than-flattering light on the track "Bagpipes From Baghdad". This newest track is not from that album but was released only online.
***"Obsessed" was the first single from Carey's new album "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" due out August 25. This 12th studio album by Mariah Carey just makes the new August 31 cut-off for Grammy Awards eligibility. Though Mariah has racked up 34 Grammy nominations (among female artists, second only to Aretha Franklin), she has managed only five wins. And none of those victories came in the top categories of album, record and song of the year.
***Over the years, Eminem has won nine Grammys but lost both his bids for album and record of the year. As a songwriter, he has contended for song of the year just twice. And he did not land a best new artist nod when he burst onto the music scene. Carey was named best new artist in 1990 for her self-titled debut album. And she won best pop vocal, female, that year. Then, though her follow-up albums all went platinum, there was a Grammy Awards drought until her smash hit "The Emancipation of Mimi".
***Carey went into the 2005 Grammys with eight nominations but left with only three wins, in the R&B genre - contemporary album, song ("We Belong Together") and female vocal. The singer-songwriter lost the big prizes of album, record and song of the year to U2 and Green Day.
***And her 2008 follow-up - the critically acclaimed, chart-topping "E=MC2" - did not have the right formula to win over Grammy voters. She was snubbed for that album as a whole and her historic No. 1 single, "Touch My Body", was shockingly shut out as well. She picked up just a nod for her gospel collaboration on "I Understand".

EMINEM DISSES MARIAH CAREY

EMINEM DISSES MARIAH CAREY

***Eminem is more than willing to embarrass himself to do the same to Mariah Carey. He ratchets up their ongoing spat about whether or not they ever dated (she says no, he says yes) with a new track, "The Warning", in which he details their one, um, prematurely concluded sexual encounter and indicates that he has pictures of the two together.
***Eminem also makes a rather obvious rhyme involved Carey's current husband, Nick Cannon. For the rest of the prurient details, you'll have to Google the song lyrics yourself. Eminem also acknowledges Carey's latest parry, a video for "Obsessed" in which Carey goes into Slim Shady mode to play a stalker. "Oh gee, is that supposed to be me in the video with the goatee? Wow Mariah, didn't expect ya to go b---s out," he raps.
***The two have been fighting for months, ever since Eminem needled her in a song "Bagpipes From Baghdad", Usmagazine.com reports, which prompted Cannon to dub Eminem "Slim Lamey" and charge that the rapper is still obssessed with Carey.

EMINEM SENDS MARIAH DEFAMATORY "WARNING"

EMINEM SENDS MARIAH DEFAMATORY "WARNING"

***Eminem we believe you. Over the last 10 years, I've heard both sides of the story. I really believe that you and Mariah had something going on at some point. I am not suggesting that I know how serious things got. I'm not saying that I believe your accounts that you and Mariah were intimate. I wasn't there. And Dude, that is not my business. I don't need or want to know.
***But you can't take it personal that Mariah denies that you had a relationship. You have to be careful about how you approach this. Mariah has successfully depicted you as a psychopath, and you continue to feed into it. After denying that you guys ever dated, Mariah released a song and video that claimed that someone is "Obsessed" with her. She put just enough info in the song to make people suspect that you are the obsessed person.
***Em, Mariah's "Obsessed" is a great video, and it worked. Then what do you do? You fall into the trap. You blow up. Go nuts and release "The Warning" that says admittedly embarrassing things about yourself as a means to prove the nature of your relationship with Mariah. You threaten to release photos and audio tapes as further proof. Eminem, let me say this again, "WE BELIEVE YOU."
***Please relax. Mariah and her girlfriends are giggling about Crazy Boy (that's you) and sipping champagne. She will deny everything until the end. She can do this in her sleep. She's got a solid poker face. Even though you are upset that high class, superstar Mariah Carey won't admit that she hung out with the kid from the 8 mile, you don't have to resort to divulging such personal business.
***The lower you drop the bar, the more indecent it makes you look. You are still a guy who is publicly defaming a woman. That never goes over well. Em, to tell your circle of friends about you and Mariah is one thing. That is bad enough. But to make a record describing the details of your relationship with a woman and then put her name on it is not cool.
***At the end of the day, Mariah is still a woman. Despite how much she upset you, you don't need to take it there. You have a daughter that I know you love more than anything. The last thing you want is for some guy to ever show your daughter such a public display of disrespect.
***Marshall, it does not matter that Mariah won't admit to seeing you. You've done good for yourself. It's really no big deal. Why does the public need to know who you have dated anyway? Let it go. Holding on to it makes you look "Obsessed".

EMINEM SLAMS MARIAH CAREY, NICK CANNON IN NEW DIS TRACK

EMINEM SLAMS MARIAH CAREY, NICK CANNON IN NEW DIS TRACK

***When will it end? No time soon, apparently. The battle pitting Eminem against Mariah Carey and husband Nick Cannon - which began with Em's "Bagpipes From Baghdad" and continued with Carey's "Obsessed" - took another turn Thursday night (July 30), when Slim Shady dropped a new dis track against Mariah called "The Warning".
***Before he starts rapping, Em tells Carey, "Only reason I dissed you in the first place is because you denied seeing me. Now I'm pissed off." He doesn't stop there. "You wanna hear something wick wack? I got the same exact tattoo that's on Nick's back," the Detroit MC says a few seconds into his rap.
***"Oh gee, is that supposed to be me in the video with the goatee? Wow Mariah, didn't expect ya to go b---s out. B---h, shut the f--- up before I put all those phone calls out when you was wilding out. Before Nick, when you was on my di--."
***From there, Em goes onto graphically describe what he alleges was his one full sexual encounter with Carey, labels her a "liar" and other ugly names, and threatens to reveal personal pictures and phones messages he has of the Carey. Eminem then plays bits of what sounds like it could be Carey's voice at the end of song: The unidentified woman refers to herself as "Mary Poppins". "[If] you gonna ruin my career, you better get one," Em advises Nick Cannon.
***In recent weeks, all three parties have denied any hard feelings: When asked about his angry blog post about "Baghdad", Cannon emphasized there was never any beef; Em has the song's lyrics were "misinterpreted"; Carey and Cannon both denied that the male-stalker character she plays in the new video for "Obsessed" - a character with a striking resemblance to Eminem - was supposed to be a parody of Slim Shady. Carey has denied having a previous relationship with Eminem; Eminem has insisted there was one.
***"My wife doesn't beef," Cannon told MTV News recently. "She's Mariah Carey. She's not beefin', she's a vegetarian. People keep saying ['Obsessed'] was directed at certain people. To be completely honest, she did the record 'cause she's a huge fan of this movie 'Mean Girls', and there's a line in the movie where one of the girls is like, 'Why are you so obsessed with me?' She says that at the beginning of the song, and that's where the concept came from. But, you know, art imitates life."
***Carey told MTV News, "Everybody started having their own speculations about who the stalker [in the video] was. I'm like, look, when I look at that stalker and me with the beard and the whole nine yards, I look like my cousin Chris. I do. I look like my brother and my cousin Chris. So basically, you know, all the speculation about who I'm playing in the video, it's not accurate."

LA REID HOLDS MEMOIRS LISTENING PARTY IN NYC

LA REID HOLDS MEMOIRS LISTENING PARTY IN NYC

***IDJ Chairman L.A. Reid hosted a listening party for Mariah's new album Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel (in stores Sept. 15th) yesterday in New York and Essence magazine was there live-tweeting from the scene.
***"Getting another early listen at Mariah Carey's new album with LA Reid. The Dream, Tricky and Mariah wrote everything on the album. Nice. First four Mariah songs sound like hits to us. Loving 'H.A.T.E.U.' Okay, Mariah's so long song 'Standing Ovation' sounds very Ne-Yoish. The Dream is feeling 'Ribbon'. Mariah does Journey's 'I Wanna Know What Li...' oops... 'I wanna know what love is' and it sounds amazing. Naz just corrected me, that's Foreigner's song but Mariah put her foot in it."
***From the Twitter posts above, we get a confirmation of Mariah's cover of Foreigner's "I Want To Know What Love Is" which was first reported by the New York Post in April 2009, and a new song title "Standing Ovation".

MARIAH CAREY TALKS DRESSING DOWN FOR "PRECIOUS" ROLE

MARIAH CAREY TALKS DRESSING DOWN FOR "PRECIOUS" ROLE

***Mariah Carey is undeniably a very glamorous person, never one to shy away from elaborate clothes, hair and makeup (well, except for dressing up as a male stalker in her "Obsessed" video!). But for her role in the film "Precious" - formerly titled "Push" - which won her critical praise at the Sundance festival earlier this year, the singer eagerly transformed from glamorous pop star into dowdy social worker Mrs. Weiss.
***"My character in 'Precious' is the antithesis of me. She is a social worker. She's very demure. She's very stoic," Carey explained to MTV News about the role. "She's just like, 'I'm doing my job,' she has an accent."
***However, Carey is quick to point out that for the film, about a pregnant and abused overweight New York teen, she agreed to the transformation because she trusted the film's director, Lee Daniels. "It's a whole thing, but Lee Daniels is a bona-fide genius so I put myself in his hands," she explained. "And he was like, 'No makeup. We're going to put dark stuff under your eyes. You're hair is going to be cut and short and brown. And you're gonna wear big clothing and it's going to be a whole thing.'"
***But for Carey, her looks are only part of the character - for the role, she had to dig deep into herself to figure out who she is as a person. "That's all the exterior, but really what I had to tap into was who this woman was."
***She went on to explain that her co-stars Mo'Nique and Gabby Sidibe (who plays the title character), had to work hard to play these people and that one of the women's performances especially left a mark on Carey. "There's a very deep scene with Mo'Nique, who plays the mother, and she deserves an Oscar for this performance," Carey said. "I'm saying it now and I really hope she gets that because that's what she deserves - I've never seen a performance like this."

SUPERSTAR MARIAH CAREY GETS DJ ANTON POWERS ON REQUEST

SUPERSTAR MARIAH CAREY GETS DJ ANTON POWERS ON REQUEST

***Songstress Mariah Carey is famous as a woman who knows what she wants - and usually gets it. So when she made Liverpool DJ Anton Powers an offer, there was really no way he could refuse. The Juice FM and club favourite is one of the hottest properties in the country for remixes, in demand by huge names including The Black Eyed Peas, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Alesha Dixon and The Saturdays.

***But, he tells Insider, he wasn't taking on any new Cahill remixes so he could concentrate on his own tracks. "Then I got a call from our manager, Jon Barlow, late on a Saturday night saying Mariah Carey's label had called asking for us to remix her new single," explains Anton.
***"Obviously I couldn't say no to her, the only issue was that if she didn't like the mix, it wouldn't get used and we wouldn't get paid! So we did the mix, sent it back to them, thankfully she liked it but said she wanted to redo the vocals to fit our mix. She went back in the studio (unfortunately in the USA and not with us) and re-did the vocals so it fits better on our mix, then she gave it the green light."
***The result, Obsessed, is due out next month but ECHO DJ of the Year Anton's already been told that it's the label's favourite remix of the year. A diva? Insider thinks not.

MARIAH CAREY TALKS OBSESSED AND NEW ALBUM

MARIAH CAREY TALKS OBSESSED AND NEW ALBUM

***"'Obsessed' is almost, like, just jokes," says Mariah Carey of her video. The singer talked exclusively to BET.com after appearing on BET's 106 & Park to debut the song's remix version featuring Gucci Mane. The leadoff single to her upcoming album, "Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel", has caused a bit of a laugh in the industry because of Mariah's portrayal of an obsessed fan, who happens to favor Eminem.
***On his most recent album, Eminem made a few derogatory comments about Mariah, which led to a brief back and forth between Eminem and the Cannons. The video almost seems like Mariah's joking response to him. Though Carey claimed on 106 that the "stalker" isn't anyone in particular, the video (which happens to reenact a scene from an old Eminem music video) tells another story.
***"I worked with Brett Ratner [on the video] who is a comedian. We talked about a few comedienne's playing the part of the stalker, but at the end of the day, actually, I think it was Nick who said why don't you just play the stalker," she said. When asked what that was like, she replied with a giggle, "So, so bizarre."
***But Eminem disses (or not) aside, Mariah says her album, due out in September, is close to being finished. For producers, she worked with Tricky and The-Dream, Timbaland and Jermaine Dupri. "I love J.D. 'Always Be My Baby' was the first song we did and it was a number one record. I can't express how much I care about him," she shared. The album, according to Mimi, has something for everybody, but is about women's empowerment. "It's about overcoming a lot of things," Mariah begins. "Each song tells its own story. It may have come from my own personal experience, or from a friend of mine that may have told me their story."
***In the interview, Mariah opened up. She shared her personal thoughts about her relationship with Michael Jackson and her performance at his memorial service. She also talked candidly about her marriage to Nick Cannon, and even discussed how different it is from her last.
